When people ask me what I have enjoyed most over the past two years while building and improving my summer house in Aegina, my answer is surprisingly simple:
Inviting friends.
Born in Athens, living in Athens, and trying to keep up with the pace of modern life, I sometimes wonder where the time goes.
Between work, family, school activities, errands, commitments, and the endless to-do lists we all carry around, finding time to simply sit and enjoy life with friends can feel almost impossible.
Yet every summer, I find myself dreaming of exactly that. A few friends gathered on the balcony. A gentle sea breeze. A table with coffee, snacks, or perhaps a glass of wine (not for me!). And those endless conversations about everything and absolutely nothing at the same time.
You know the ones.
The conversations that start with holiday plans and somehow end up discussing life, dreams, childhood memories, future ambitions, and the meaning of happiness. Those are the moments I treasure most.
One afternoon this summer, my dear friend Evangelia called me.
"Are you free for a coffee by the beach?" she asked.
"Just take the ferry and come!"
And that was it. No complicated planning. No weeks of trying to match calendars. No endless messages. Just a simple invitation.
Forty minutes later, she stepped off the ferry, and before we knew it, we were sitting by the sea with one of the most beautiful views imaginable. The waves were gently rolling in. The sun was sparkling on the water.
And there we were, talking about our lives, our families, our dreams, and our plans for the future. Nothing extraordinary. And yet, everything about it felt special. As the afternoon passed, I found myself feeling incredibly grateful.
Not because of the view. Not because of the house. Not even because of the island. But because of the people.
Because at the end of the day, a beautiful house becomes even more beautiful when it is filled with friendship.
The balcony is nicer when there's laughter around it. The coffee tastes better when shared. The sunsets are more memorable when someone is sitting next to you enjoying them too.
Moments like these remind me how lucky I am.
Lucky to have a place that brings people together.
Lucky to have friendships that survive busy schedules and everyday routines.
And lucky to live in a world where a simple phone call can turn into a perfect summer afternoon.
So today's message is simple:
Make time for your friends.
Invite them over.
Have that coffee.
Take that ferry.
Sit by the sea.
Talk about everything and nothing.
Because years from now, these are the moments we will remember.
Not the tasks.
Not the deadlines.
Not the things we rushed to finish.
But the laughter.
The conversations.
The people who shared them with us.
And for me, that will always be one of the greatest gifts of this little house in Aegina.
